Karin Hurt, David Dye
R454 Discovery Miles 4 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A must-have resource for building collaboration and trust when the wrong word or phrase can set someone off. In many workplaces today, workplace conflict is an escalating issue.  The shift to remote work and hybrid teams has left many people longing for deeper human connection. On top of this, add a younger generation clamoring for more feedback and impatient for change, steady advances in technology that can feel threatening to job security, or people reexamining priorities and quietly quitting.  Take the increase in anxiety, stress, and depression, mix in the loss of human relationships, and you get less tolerance and understanding leading, ultimately, to more unresolved workplace conflict.  Powerful Phrases for Dealing with Workplace Conflict is an essential resource for all employees (and their managers) who are looking for help on how to navigate frequent workplace conflicts, including with their boss and other difficult people, so they can rebuild trust, collaboration, and ultimately enjoy more influence at work.   Leadership and workplace culture experts Karin Hurt and David Dye share practical and easy-to-follow tactics such as: Over 50 actual phrases you can use to deescalate common workplace conflict situations and build trust. Sample dialogs to demonstrate how phrasing improves interactions. Critical communication tools to ensure workplace issues are addressed before they fester and become more difficult to manage. Findings and real-world cases from a workplace conflict survey conducted by the authors.

Steven W. Hurt, Marvin Reznikoff, John F. Clarkin
R4,036 Discovery Miles 40 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Using actual case material from the psychiatric hospital setting, the principal setting in which psychological assessments are conducted, this volume shows how psychological assessment contributes to the clarification of diagnostic issues and the development of an optimal treatment plan. Beginning with disorders usually first evident in infancy, childhood, or adolescence and ending with the Axis II personality disorders, the book presents an array of case material to reflect the range of DSM-III-R categories. Few changes have been made in the original test materials provided or in the clinical situations presented. The authors examine the relationship between the psychological assessments implemented by clinical psychologists and the treatment planning situation faced by the provider of clinical services. This volume should be a valuable resource for psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, counsellors, and other mental health professionals.

Ernest Albert "Andy" Andrews Jr., David B. Hurt
R732 Discovery Miles 7 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ernest 'Andy' Andrews began his training as a machine gunner at Fort McClellan in Alabama in July 1943. In early 1944, he arrived in the UK for further training before D-Day, ahead of the 1st Infantry Division deploying on the evening of June 5th on the USS Henrico. Due to a problem with his landing craft, Andrews only reached Omaha Beach on the early evening of June 6th, but his experience was still a harrowing one. Fighting in Normandy, he was nicked by a bullet and evacuated to England in late July when the wound became infected, before returning to participate in the Normandy breakout. Following the race across France in late August, he participated in the rout of several retreating German units near Mons, Belgium, and his outfit approached Aachen in mid-September. For a month, Andrews' squad defended a bunker position in the Siegfried Line against repeated German attacks, then after Aachen surrendered, the unit fought its way through the Hurtgen Forest to take Hill 232. Early on the morning of November 19th, he engaged in his toughest battle of the war as the Germans attempted to retake Hill 232, where he was again wounded. After surgery and a month's convalescence he rejoined H Company in time to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. His unit then participated in the fast-moving Roer to the Rhine campaign, then the battle to expand the Remagen bridgehead. Breaking out from the Remagen bridgehead, Andrews' squad stumbled on a German tank unit and this time he narrowly escaped death. Following a rapid advance up to the Paderborn area, the unit raced to Germany's Harz Mountains, where the Wehrmacht was trying to organize a last stand. They ended the war fighting in Czechoslovakia, where Andrews witnesses the German surrender in early May. Following occupation duty, he returned to the States in October 1945. This vivid first-hand account takes the reader along from Normandy to victory with Andy Andrews and his machine-gun crew. The war shaped the author's postwar life in countless ways, and in 1994, he made the first of three return visits to the European battlefields where he had fought.

Melissa Hurt
R1,423 Discovery Miles 14 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book situates the work of the renowned voice and movement trainer Arthur Lessac in the context of contemporary actor training as a whole. Melissa Hurt uses Maurice Merleau-Ponty's theories of embodiment to frame Lessac's approach in terms of Embodied Acting, a key subject in contemporary performance. In doing so, she explains how the actor can come to experience both technique and expression as a subjective whole, through meditation and spatial attunement. As well as feeding this somatic approach into a wider discussion of embodiment, the author provides concrete examples of how the practice can be put into effect, and studied at university level.

Hybrid Rule and State Formation - Public-Private Power in the 21st Century (Paperback): Shelley Hurt, Ronnie Lipschutz Hybrid Rule and State Formation - Public-Private Power in the 21st Century (Paperback)
Shelley Hurt, Ronnie Lipschutz
R1,265 Discovery Miles 12 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Neoliberalism has been the reigning ideology of our era. For the past four decades, almost every real-world event of any consequence has been traced to the supposedly omnipresent influence of neoliberalism. Instead, this book argues that states across the world have actually grown in scope and reach. The authors in this volume contest the view that the past three decades have been marked by the diminution of the state in the face of neoliberalism. They argue instead that we are witnessing a new phase of state formation, which revolves around hybrid rule-that is, a more expansive form of state formation that works through privatization and seeks pacification and depoliticization as instrumental to enhancing state power. Contributors argue that that the process of hybridization, and hybrid rule point towards a convergence on a more authoritarian capitalist regime type, possibly, but not necessarily, more closely aligned with the Beijing model-one toward which even the United States, with its penchant for surveillance and discipline, appears to be moving. This volume will shed new light on evolving public-private relations, and the changing nature of power and political authority in the 21st century and will be of interest to students and scholars of IPE, international relations and political theory.

The Cambridge Handbook of Law and Entrepreneurship in the United States (Hardcover, New Ed): D. Gordon Smith, Brian Broughman,... The Cambridge Handbook of Law and Entrepreneurship in the United States (Hardcover, New Ed)
D. Gordon Smith, Brian Broughman, Christine Hurt
R5,413 Discovery Miles 54 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Law plays a key role in determining the level of entrepreneurial action in society. Legal rules seek to define property rights, facilitate private ordering, and impose liability for legal wrongs, thereby attempting to establish conditions under which individuals may act. These rules also channel the development of technology, regulate information flows, and determine parameters of competition. Depending on their structure and implementation, legal rules can also discourage individuals from acting. It is thus crucial to determine which legal rules and institutions best enable entrepreneurs, whose core function is to challenge incumbency. This volume assembles legal experts from diverse fields to examine the role of law in facilitating or impeding entrepreneurial action. Contributors explore issues arising in current policy debates, including the incentive effect of legal rules on startup activity; the role of law in promoting or foreclosing market entry; and the effect of entrepreneurial action on legal doctrine.

A classic love story and a seminal work of Irish literature that is a testament to romance, magic and the power of true love. With an introduction by actor John Hurt. In love everything changes, and continues changing all the time. There is no stillness, no stopped clock of the heart in which the moment of happiness holds forever, but only the constant whirring forward motion of desire and need. . . Nicholas Coughlan and Isabel Gore are meant for each other - they just don't know it yet. Though each has found both heartache and joy in the wild Irish landscape, their paths are yet to cross. But as God, ghosts, fate and the sheer power of true love pull Nicholas and Isabel together, so too does life threaten to tear them apart . . . Magical, lyrical and deeply romantic, Niall Williams' Four Letters of Love moved readers the world over and became an international bestseller. It is a life-affirming tribute to human folly, to fate, and to the miracle of love.

Indian Agriculture in America - Prehistory to the Present (Paperback, New Ed): R. Douglas Hurt Indian Agriculture in America - Prehistory to the Present (Paperback, New Ed)
R. Douglas Hurt
R997 Discovery Miles 9 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a sweeping survey of American Indian agriculture from its ancient origins to the present. It combines a wealth of historical, anthropological, legal, and economic information in a clear, readable synthesis.

"This is without doubt the most thorough and comprehensive treatment of American Indian agriculture in print. It is multidisciplinary and impressive both in scope and in depth. Hurt shows a deft hand in summarizing not only the literature on the evolution of agriculture in North America, but also the dismal failure of American Indian policy to build on earlier Native American achievements. This book is the starting point for any serious consideration of the literature on subjects ranging from the domestication of corn, to pre-contact irrigation, to current Indian water rights."--Richard White, author of "It's Your Misfortune and None of My Own."

"This extremely worthwhile work is a significant contribution to both Indian history and general American history."--Gilbert Fite, past president of the Agricultural History Society and the Western History Association.

"Merits the attention of all who are concerned about the past, present, and future of American Indians. The chapters devoted to the past century should be required reading for students of modern agricultural and American Indian history."--Peter Iverson, author of "When Indians Became Cowboys: Native Peoples and Cattle Ranching in the American West."

"A very thorough and readable account. The scope of this work is truly impressive. The bulk of it revolves around the implementation of United States federal Indian policies aimed at transforming Native Americans into self-sufficient yeoman farmers and farm families during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Hurt's chapters on Indian agriculture and water rights in the twentieth century are very timely and instructive. Should become a standard text for American Indian history courses."--"New Mexico Historical Review."

"A useful introduction to the subject that is organized in an admirably clear fashion and can be recommended to student and specialist alike."--"Journal of American History."

"Offers fresh and vital insights into the life and culture of the American Indian."--"American Historical Review."

"A comprehensive, authoritative account of one of the most significant topics in the history of Indian-white relations."--"Western Historical Quarterly."
